| About Susan
Susan Strong Kelley grew up riding in Gladwyne, Pa., located in the outskirts of Suburban Philadelphia. Raised by avid horse lovers, Alice and Trowbridge Strong, she worked up the ranks of Bridlewild, her local pony club, becoming an “A" candidate. Susan also competed successfully at the preliminary level of combined training in both Pennsylvania and California for 5 years. In addition, she had the pleasure of wrangling horses and cattle while riding bareback during summers in Wyoming.
Horses have a great impact on so many lives, but none more to Susan then her equine partner Miles. This thoroughbred, purchased as a 4-year-old, presented Susan with a number of challenges. She discovered that the conventional methods of addressing these challenges just did not work.
Susan went looking for answers and found that the approaches of Centered Riding® provided her with the connection she was looking for between herself and Miles. Susan thanks her Master Centered Riding® Instructor, Susan Harris, and Kim Walnes World Bronze Medalist, for their wonderful help.
Now at 19, Miles is a horse who fully enjoys his duel job as a terrific riding horse for Susan and "school master" for her students. All of Susan's lesson horses are members of this winning formula each one receiving the "mindful" riding and holistic body work Susan has come to embrace here at Big House Stables Holistic Horse & Rider Center.
In your lesson with me you will start with a private lesson in my beautiful all weather outdoor arena so that I can analyze your individual needs. Together we will build a strong foundation of balance and coordination and learn the basics to successfully ride independently. I teach each student as the unique person they are, and go at the most comfortable pace for that person, nobody finds themselves overwhelmed either physically or emotionally.
My years of studying and experiencing Feldenkrais now combined with my Reiki skills adds another dimension to what I now offer my students.
These skills are incorporated into "the hands on body work” I do on my students during the lessons. The results are a more complete integration of body awareness, release of stiffness and pain resulting in the rider becoming more relaxed and skilled while riding.
I have taught people of all ages from 7 to 85 years old. I have successfully experienced the challenges of teaching the physically disabled, learning and/or visually impaired. Each student is taught as an individual and my teaching methods are adapted to meet their individual needs. My horses are patient and kind. If I am going to err I will err on the side of safely.
Susan met her future husband Stephen, while fox hunting with the Genesee Valley Hunt in 1979. They have 2 grown children and have been happily participating in the merry chase for over 28 years. These combined experiences have laid the foundation for her solid horsemanship skills. For over 32 years, Susan has been sharing this knowledge and experience with her students. |
